Culture | Challenging Beauty Standards.

If you’ve opened up social media these past few weeks, you’ve likely seen a slew of new Vogue ‘covers’. The DIY front pages originate from the #VogueChallenge, a grassroots TikTok & Instagram endeavor gone viral.

There is a sense of fun, creativity and proactiveness to the challenge: rather than wait for fashion to take notice, creators took matters into their own hands.

That is, until one realizes that there was very little choice in that regard.

It’s no secret that the photographers behind the majority of magazine covers are white and male. Few women, people of color, and nonbinary individuals have ever been granted those opportunities. Similarly, the people depicted in fashion imagery also tend to reflect a narrow subset of the population.

Which makes this crowdsourced, socially-driven showcase of new talent a cause for celebration. A scroll through the submissions proves that there is no shortage of willing and capable people. I firmly believe brands and publications must be more active in fostering these individuals and granting them the opportunity to participate at the highest levels of creative commission.
