New Music | France sets its sights on ‘Destination Eurovision’.

Updated: Jan 16, 2018

France’s newly revamped national final ‘Destination Eurovision’ has become the toast of the Eurosphere in recent weeks. And this is due, in no small part, to French Head of Delegation Edoardo Grassi’s ambitious & precise direction that has seen the country make a triumphant return to the left hand side of the scoreboard.

And this trend will definitely continue, if the lineup's quality at ‘Destination Eurovision’ is anything to go by. Degrassi has carefully curated and served up a wide selection of musical styles and genres for the nation’s delectation.

From sweet chanson, to heady electro pop and zesty Oriental R&B, this thoroughly modern, diverse and eclectic menu has had Eurovision fans salivating for weeks. It’s the kind of French music that’s heard outside of Eurovision, and the kind of French music that should be entered into Eurovision.

Before I list my picks, listen to a recap of all the competing entries below:

It’s an impressive, Spotify-friendly lineup. Any one of these songs would be a worthy entry for France, but there are five standouts for me.

Rêve De Gamin by Nassi

Soaring chorus with an Oriental sound wrapped in a modern production. Rêve De Gamin was one of the songs that had me rewinding and playing its 30 second snippet over and over. Instantly catchy with a universal message, this is my personal favourite.

Ciao by Malo

One of the first acts to be teased, Ciao is a beautiful bilingual song and has a very indie, Salem Al Fakir vibe that’s gloriously melancholic-melodic.

Mamma Mia by Louka

Not to be confused with another notable number. Louka’s Mamma Mia is continental swagger with a tropical blush, delivered with just enough French nonchalance to make it almost too cool for school.

Same by June The Girl

This is another ultra-modern electro number by acclaimed act June The Girl. With its polished production and catchy refrain, it finds itself as another favourite to make it to Lisbon.

Eva by Lisandro Cuxi

Memorable & instant on first listen, Eva channels Jason Derulo and Usher in this wall-of-sound number that promises dynamic staging. Another one of my absolute favourites.

So who will end up taking the ticket & flying the French tricolour? The competition is cutthroat and there are multiple favourites, so it’s all up in the air. That's the reason why ‘Destination Eurovision’ is going to be a must-watch this nationals finals season. Big kudos to Edoardo Grassi for creating & building this amazing momentum to fuel France's fire for Eurovision.

Is this another Renaissance in the making? The Alien Aesthete certainly thinks so.

The first semi-final kicks off this Saturday and you can catch the show live either online on Facebook Live, or on international broadcast via TV5 Monde. All competing songs will be available to listen/download on all major platforms tomorrow.
